[Book Review] Becky Lynch: The Man: Not Your Average Average Girl By Rebecca Quin
When you watch Rebecca Quin perform as “The Man” Becky Lynch, she appears as a strong-willed, determined, opinionated woman but from the very first page of Becky Lynch: The Man: Not Your Average Average Girl the reader discovers that the woman behind The Man has suffered from the same insecurities that you-and-I deal with every day. She’s a very honest writer who reveals that through life she has dealt with self-doubt and even an eating disorder.
It’s ironic that Ms. Quin is an established successful superstar considering she didn’t even like wrestling when she was a kid and it was her brother Richy who liked it. Her attitude towards it changed when, during The Attitude Era, she glanced at the TV and saw future WWE Hall of Famer “The Hardcore Legend” Mick Foley. After becoming a fan of Foley’s and hearing that a new wrestling school was opening nearby, Ms. Quin came down sick with the wrestling bug.
She reveals to the reader that once she became a wrestler, she wanted to change the game and eventually main event WrestleMania – the biggest premium live event of the year on the WWE’s calendar. She then takes the reader and tells them all about her career. From writing about her training to her attempts on changing how WWE’s executives looked at women’s wrestling, there’s nothing she doesn’t talk about.
Becky Lynch: The Man: Not Your Average Average Girl isn’t just an autobiography about the difficulties she’s faced during her life. She also opens up about her relationship with Colby Lopez, also known as fellow WWE Superstar and current World Heavyweight Champion Seth “Freakin” Rollins. It’s like reading a script for a rom-com. The reader is told about the first time they met. The self-arguments she had with herself on whether or not she should be romantically involved with a fellow WWE Superstar, the night she gave in to her desires, when they found out she was pregnant, and the day she had their baby. It’s almost better than Sleepless in Seattle!
I’ve been a fan of professional wrestling since 1988 and since 1999 I have read autobiographies by many wrestlers and I honestly feel that Becky Lynch: The Man: Not Your Average Average Girl written by WWE Superstar Rebecca Quin is the BEST autobiography I’ve read. Ms. Quin is a great writer – who has found her voice and is able to be serious, funny, and informative in one paragraph without having any difficulty.
