In the mind of “The American Nightmare” Cody Rhodes, the RAW after WrestleMania 39 was going to be one of the best nights of his career. He had already won the WWE 30-Man Royal Rumble Match to earn a shot at the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion: “The Head of the Table” “The Tribal Chief” Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39. In Rhodes’ mind, he was going to return to WWE RAW as the new Undisputed WWE Universal Champion. But at WrestleMania 39, Rhodes came up short due to interference from Solo Sikoa.
After being declined when requesting a rematch against Reigns on the RAW After WrestleMania, Rhodes decided to challenge Reigns and Sikoa to a tag team match. “The Beast Incarnate” Brock Lesnar agreed to be Rhodes’ tag team partner but moments before the match began, Lesnar turned on Rhodes and brutalized “The American Nightmare” with a vicious assault.
Cody and Brock met one-on-one for the first time at Backlash and Cody came out on top. On the May 8, 2023 edition of WWE RAW, Lesnar attacked Rhodes while Rhodes was competing in a Triple-Threat First Round Match in the World Heavyweight Championship Tournament. Lesnar then broke the arm of Rhodes on the RAW before WWE Night of Champions. “The American Nightmare” did indeed compete against “The Beast Incarnate” at Night of Champions and this time it was Lesnar who came out on top as he forced Rhodes to pass out to the pain caused by The Kimura Lock.
Cody Rhodes issued a challenge to Brock Lesnar and stated he would face him anytime and anywhere. However; Lesnar would not reappear on RAW until July 3 during a brawl that saw Lesnar get a Cody Cutter. The following week, Rhodes made a challenge to Lesnar for SummerSlam’23 but Lesnar wasn’t at the arena to reply. This past Monday when RAW was in Atlanta, another brawl broke out between “The American Nightmare” and “The Beast Incarnate” and this time it saw Brock apply The Kimura Lock on Cody in front of his own family, including his mother – Michelle, who were seated in the front row. After Lesnar released the hold, he accepted Cody’s challenge for SummerSlam and the match was made official later in the evening.
Now with both men holding a victory over the other, it comes down to SummerSlam\ when “The American Nightmare” Cody Rhodes battles “The Beast Incarnate” Brock Lesnar one-on-one. Will it indeed be a nightmare for Lesnar or will Lesnar make it an American nightmare for Rhodes?
